Dark Shala Cathy Benedetto 9781613181164 Books

WOW! Well this book was different for me but in some was the same. I mostly read fantasy but adding some Science into this mix was awesome. Author Cathy Benedetto has a very unique way of writing. Her story line is very strong and her characters have a, well lets say a diffidently growing on you kind of life.

There is like the synopsis states, a lot of battles in this book. Twist and turns in this story line is one that has you stopping and asking, "okay will you please tell me who you are???" (lol)

There is every kind of issue that you could imagine that comes up in fighting. Why, and what history in our life is the reason behind all the battles.

I first was not to sure that I was going to be able to read this book. But let me tell you that after the first chapter "I WAS HOOKED!" And at the end I am ready to begin the next in the series. What is next for Sandala? Will the more prophecies come true? Will there ever be an end to all the battles?

I wholeheartedly recommend this Amazingly, Very Suspenseful, Well Written book to ALL my fantasy/fictional readers!

So due to the above, I am giving this book a Breath of Life ratings of:

Five Clock Rating!!!

Dark Shala Cathy Benedetto 9781613181164 Books Reviews

This is the middle book of the trilogy. As an avid fan of anthropomorphism, I enjoyed the communication with the Fels (cats of all types) in all the books. The Shala are the guardians of Sandala and the Fels are their companion warriors.

This book introduces the fly in the ointment. Who are the Dark Shala and what are their origins?

Human greed and perversity abound in this volume. Anthropomorphic cats are the only unsinged heroes having no down side to their behavior.

This book builds the foundation for the culmination of events in the final volume.

I enjoyed it and recommend it.
After five centuries of peace, the Surmese Empire two-front invasion left the kingdoms on the continent of Sandala reeling. The prophecy of the Shala warriors (accompanied by their Fels) of saving the humans has begun with the liberation of Gleneden and Palaton (see The Eyes of Sandala). The Shala led by the royal Tahjeen Tier escorts many humans through the underground passages beneath the Sea of Death leading to their cavernous home inside a crater. However, on their journey to safety, someone murders Ladean the Shala; Tahjeen and his beloved Ariann the healer know the impossible has occurred. A traitorous Shala has betrayed his species and the prophecy by killing a Shala.

In the frozen north, a raging and resentful Krale, the exiled Shala, plots revenge against his former queen and her son for exiling him ten years ago as a child when the Fels rejected him. He has connected with his own beast a dreadwolf. With his Dark Shala exiles, traitors within the Shala and an alliance with the Surmese, Krale believes he is destined to sit on the throne and rule Sandala.

The exciting second Shala military fantasy is fast-paced throughout even with a frantic feel that time is running out on getting the humans to safety. Filled with betrayal and a close look at the Dark Shala, readers will appreciate this solid middle entry as Tahjeen tries to save the continent from invaders, angry exiles and quislings who share his doubts about fulfilling the prophecy.

In book two, the story admittedly got better. The kinks that were in book 1 were worked out, and you started to get a feel for Tahjeen. This book also had a bit more suspense added to it which made it work better for me. I enjoyed the Military fantasy aspect of this book and I do have to say I like the Shala.

Once again there were strange editing mistakes that I am not sure if are due to an issue or a formatting issue. I would suggest looking into that because it did detract from the story for me.

Details/Disclaimer I received this trilogy for my honest review. The review copies held no determination on my final review.
Exotic settings? Check. Heroic characters? Check. Big war? Check.

Everything you'd expect from an epic fantasy can be found in Dark Shala by Cathy Benedetto, the second book of the Shala Trilogy. The Shala are a tall race of powerful dark skinned warriors who possess a telepathic bond with large cats they call fels. As a vast army invades their lands, just as had been prophesied, the Shala come to the aid of the native humans.

In this second installment, their leader, Tahjeen, and his Shala escort human refugees through an ancient network of underground tunnels. But they soon find themselves being hunted by Shala exiles that practice dark magic, or "Dark Shala," who have sided with the invaders for a chance at revenge.

Benedetto has created an interesting mix of lovable characters as well as a world and story worthy of the genre. She knows how to keep a reader turning those pages long after they should be going to bed.

I found the prologue to be unnecessary since it was merely a recap of the previous book, and the information it provided was nothing that didn't later pop up in the story itself, whether through dialogue or exposition. Those types of prologues are neither required and can be quite irksome. But aside from that, the story was an enjoyable read.

Best to read while listening to the soundtrack to Avatar.
